KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A family whose son died in the Kalamazoo County Jail plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the jail.
WWMT-TV reported that 29-year-old Chase Lovell died by suicide while in the jail, a death his family feels was preventable.
The lawsuit claimed that the Kalamazoo County Jail ignored Lovell’s obvious and known mental health needs and that he was supposed to be constantly monitored with a camera and visited in person every 30 minutes in accordance with jail policy.
According to Lovell’s attorneys, he was left alone for an hour-and-a-half before being found unresponsive.
His family is now seeking at least $150,000 in damages for violations of his constitutional rights and rights under the American with Disabilities Act.
Lovell had been admitted to Ascension Borgess Hospital in December 2020 where he spent four days before being accused of starting a fire.
He was charged with first-degree arson on December 16 of 2020 by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors office and was taken to jail where he was held on a $100,000 bond.
He was reported deceased to his mother by a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Thursday, December 17, 2020.
