MARSHALL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — With the possibility of severe weather this week and throughout the upcoming summer months, Calhoun County 911 is alerting it’s residents to some changes relating to SOME severe thunderstorm warnings.
In August of 2021, the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) added a ‘destructive’ threat category for severe thunderstorms with winds of 80 MPH and/or hail of 2.75” (baseball size).
Should a storm be categorized as ‘destructive,’ a wireless emergency alert will be sent to cell phones in the affected area.
In addition to tornado warnings, outdoor warning sirens in Calhoun County will now also be activated if a storm has winds of 80 MPH or greater. Straight line winds of this strength can be as, or more devastating as a weak tornado.
