BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert says two Battle Creek Police officers “violated no criminal law” when they fired at a woman outside of a mental health facility in December.
40-year-old Sareedi Harris of Battle Creek is facing eight charges. She has been charged with three counts of assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and damaging police property.
The shooting incident took place at College Street and West Emmett Street as police were assisting with a court-ordered mental health pick-up.
Police say Harris was sitting in a parked car when they arrived. When officers attempted to detain her, the woman waved a handgun and opened fire from inside the vehicle.
Shots were exchanged until she sped away. She was found a short time later with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder.
According to Gilbert, Sgt. Chad Fickle and Detective Brandin Huggett acted in “lawful self-defense of themselves and others after being put in a deadly situation.”
Two children were in the car during the incident. Neither were injured and they were placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
