KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Sparked by a mass murder at an elementary school in Uvalde Texas, Kalamazoo Public Schools has released their plans to further beef up security in school buildings this summer.
At last night’s Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri and Board President Patti Scholler-Barber called on Congress to enact gun control legislation.
Raichoudhuri says they spent much of this past school year working to improve mental and behavioral health support with new staff and programs. They have also beefed up their communications gear, and given teachers access from classrooms.
She says they have already fortified the entrances at most of the schools in the district, and the remaining three will be upgraded soon.
The district will be trying out the Raptor Technologies School Security System in the administration building to track visitors this summer, and they will be using it district wide this fall as staff get trained.
They will also utilize Lightspeed Alert, an artificial intelligence system that scans the internet for threats to schools or students.
New staff will get ALICE training before fall.
