KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Yesterday was the last day of class in many local school districts. Kids in Portage won’t get out until Monday. In Kalamazoo, today is the last day of class.
The City of Kalamazoo will be launching a multi-pronged effort to keep youngsters engaged, spending $1.7-million on sports, recreational, employment and educational activities. It all begins with the Summer Kickoff at Upjohn Park this afternoon.
It’s a joint effort by the city and the schools to have some fun, and to keep students engaged.
Superintendent Rita Raichouduri says Kalamazoo Public Schools expects over 1,000 students to attend their enhanced summer school program as they help students to catch up academically.
One goal this year is to reach out to children who have never participated in organized summer activities before.
