KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo County judge ruling on Friday, June 30, that the case against the driver charged in the crash that killed a Western Michigan University student is headed toward trial.
20-year-old Hunter Hudgins faces one felony charge of operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol causing death.
Hudgins struck 19-year-old Bailey Broderick with his car while she was walking off-campus on Fraternity Village Drive back on November 3, 2021.
An arrest warrant for Hudgins was issued in April, nearly six months after the crash. Friends and family of Broderick gathered in protest outside of the Kalamazoo County Courthouse and called on prosecutors to arrest Hudgins just days before he was charged.
He pled not guilty to two misdemeanor charges, to include a moving violation causing death and a person under 21 with a alcohol content of .02 to .07% according to court records.
Hudgins was released on a $10,000 recognizance bond hours after his April arrest, and will remain free while he awaits his trial.
