KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo community activist who combats bullying says she has been victimized by an overzealous Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer who stopped her car for a broken tail light.
Gwen Hooker was not shy about complaining directly to the Kalamazoo City Commission about the Monday Morning incident, claiming the man using her car was assaulted.
She says the officer overreacted to the Narcan that was in the car. That’s the emergency drug that can be used by anyone to save heroin addicts who overdose.
She says because charges were dropped, she has no police report to use to get her car repaired. She says it was scratched and dented by the K-9 brought in to sniff for drugs.
KDPS says her complaint is being reviewed by their Professional Standards Unit.
Hooker also appeared at this week’s Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners meeting, but this time to accept a resolution against bullying in school and the workplace.
