KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners is anxious to start pumping federal COVID-19 relief dollars into the community, but they not an easy job, and it’s about to get tougher.
New County Administrator Kevin Catlin asked the board last night to start setting priorities for the $40 million they have left to allocate.
He says there are plenty of groups out there that have submitted ideas, which total three to four times the amount they have to spend. 131 agencies, county departments, and nonprofits have submitted bids.
Commissioners told Catlin they want to see a list of those agencies before setting priorities.
Also slowing the effort are all the rules, regulations and reporting requirements in place when federal funding is involved.
Commissioners last night also asked to know more about how the Kalamazoo City Commission streamlined the process by giving $1 million in ARPA dollars to the local United Way, letting that non-profit address emergency needs.
