PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is set to perform a prescribed fire, otherwise known as a controlled burn in a section of the Gourdneck State Game Area in Portage over the next couple of days.
According to the Portage Department of Public Safety, the burn is taking place in a section of land south of East Centre Avenue and east of Angling Road and US-131.
DNR officials say the goal of a prescribed fire is to control invasive species and underbrush, create critical habitat for wildlife and encourage new native growth in forested areas.
They went onto say that trained fire staff will employ specialized equipment to light and control the fire, and that the burn itself will likely be done in late afternoon.
