GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After Grand Rapids officials released video of the officer-involved shooting death of Patrick Lyoya yesterday, demonstrators called Lyoya’s death murder and said the officer in the case escalated the situation. Hundreds of demonstrators marched around Grand Rapid Police Headquarters for several hours on Wednesday.
The NAACP held a news conference in which members expressed condolences to Lyoya’s family and criticized the criminal justice system, which they say is shaped by bias. Lyoya’s family has asked supporters not to demonstrate.
Police pulled over Lyoya after his license plate registration tabs didn’t match the vehicle they were placed on. Lyoya resisted a police officer who then shot the man during a struggle. Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting.
