KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo River Alliance announced that it will be cancelling their 2nd annual river cleanup event scheduled for Saturday, June 18th.
Officials say the cancellation of the event in downtown Kalamazoo is due to safety concerns. They said that the river and trail system along the banks of the Kalamazoo River where volunteers would be cleaning is no longer considered safe due to the high amount of drug paraphernalia and biohazardous waste.
“Safety is of the utmost importance while hosting these types of events. We cannot in good conscience send volunteers into an environment with the high likelihood of an individual being hurt” says Kalamazoo River Alliance President, Ryan Baker. “ We hope to bring the event back to Kalamazoo in 2023 if conditions are better”
