LANSING, MI — It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week and the Michigan Department of Transportation and other agencies is asking drivers to be vigilant now that a new road construction season is underway.
In 2021, three people lost their lives while working to improve Michigan roads: Lawrence Leonarduzzi from the Iron County Road Commission, Reason Tillman-Morgan from Anlaan Corp., and Shawn Kelley of STARS Ready Labor.
Last year’s tragedies could have been avoided by drivers adhering to basic rules of the road, MDOT says, and driving at posted construction zone speed limits.
“We can fix our roads and bridges safely if we all work together,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. “Our road agencies work diligently to create safe work zones, and motorists need to be responsible and cautious when driving through them.”
