KALAAMZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools will mandate masks for another two weeks, perhaps longer, but for the first time some members of the Board of Education are beginning to question the requirement.
Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri Thursday night recommended the extension of the mandate because of rising infection rates after spring break, and because of new variants here and overseas.
But for the first time, two Board of Education members voted against her recommendation. Trustee Ken Greschak says the virus no longer poses the threat to health and human lives it once did.

But Trustee Megan Maddock says they made a pledge to parents to keep the masks through the end of the school year if they returned to class.
Dr. Raichoudhuri also recommended that they reevaluate the mandate at each board meeting, taking new data into account as the school year and the disease runs its course.
