(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The dean of Michigan’s Congressional delegation emotionally announced Tuesday morning on the U.S. House floor he will be retiring at the end of this year.
Republican Congressman Fred Upton has decided to end a 36-year career in Congress.
An independent redistricting commission put Upton and fellow Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga in the same redrawn district.
The 68-year-old Upton at first decided to run against Huizenga in the August Republican Primary.
Upton called for a return of civility and bipartisanship.
Upton worked for the Reagan administration before being elected to Congress in 1986.
Upton was one of 10 House Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching former President Donald Trump,
Trump had endorsed Huizenga in the newly drawn Fourth Congressional District.
