KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Western Michigan University has found it’s new head basketball coach.
Dwayne Stephens is set to take the position following nearly two decades as Tom Izzo’s right-hand man at Michigan State University where he spent the last 19 seasons as a Spartans assistant, and as the program’s associate head coach for the last decade.
Stephens will now take the reins of WMU’s basketball program after they were held by Clayton Bates, who was let go by the university earlier this year after two seasons. Steve Hawkins held the position for 17 years until 2020 when Bates took over.
Stephens, a native of Ferndale, played at Michigan Stated from 1989 to 1993, and also spent time as an assistant at Oakland and Marquette before returning to his alma mater in 2003.
