KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The most recent police involved shooting in Kalamazoo has renewed calls from city officials for efforts to stem the rising tide of gun violence.
At a news conference Monday on the gunfight Sunday between a Battle Creek man, who was wanted on multiple charges, and Public Safety Officers, Chief Vernon Coakley said his department can’t do it alone, but it will take the whole community.
Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson also spoke at the news conference, offering his condolences to the family of the suspect. He praised the actions of the officers, but also commiserated with them for having to take a life.
He went further at Monday night’s Kalamazoo City Commission Meeting, asking “What are we going to do to reduce gun violence?”
A joint Kalamazoo County-City of Kalamazoo coalition of elected officials is expected to release some initial recommendations soon, with longer range solutions expected later.
