KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Not many beers get their own celebration day. Bell’s Oberon Ale is the exception.
Bell’s Eccentric Cafe & General Store in downtown Kalamazoo opened Monday to celebrate Oberon Day, with live music, games, and of course, the first Oberon of the season.
Governor Whitmer also proclaimed March 21 Oberon Day. According to a release from the Governor’s office, “The release of Oberon is a quintessential Michigan celebration across the entire state.”
“Since 1992, Michiganders have celebrated the release of Oberon every spring, stimulating our hospitality licensed beverage economy. Oberon is an American Wheat Ale, one of the most iconic craft beers in Michigan and recognized by beer coinsurers as the first sight of spring and warmer weather. In 2021, the state of Michigan enjoyed 14,067,074 pints of Oberon Ale,”, the release said.
This year Oberon varieties include Mango Habanero Oberon, Pineapple Jalapeno Oberon, Cherry Oberon, and Chipotle Lime Oberon.
The Kalamazoo based brewer says the 5.8% ABV beer will be available through August.
