KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools will reassess its masking mandate in the coming weeks, but for now it will remain in place, with school officials saying another spike could be just over the horizon.
The school district goes on Spring Break next week and previous breaks have led to outbreaks. Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri says a lot of things could change between now and their April 7 meeting when the decision on the mandate will be made.
She says infection rates overseas are surging again, and the U.S. usually follows.
She says public health officials have eased mask requirements before, only to reimpose them when infection rates bounce back up.
The KPS Board of Education at its meeting Thursday agreed to have staff reassess the issue, but they also made it clear they are leaning toward sticking with the mandate.
Several members of the public spoke about masks last night, and all of them were in favor of keeping the mandate.
Public health officials have lifted their requirement for masks in many indoor settings, but are also allowing public school districts and other entities to set their own rules.
