KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners has picked Kevin Catlin to be their new Administrator, but commissioners were sharply divided on whether he should get the offer.
For now Catlin is the Administrator in Boone County, Illinois, but plans to leave next month because of differences with his board there.
Commissioner Dale Shugars Tuesday night told his fellow commissioners he doesn’t think Catlin is qualified, and wants to know the real reason he is leaving his current post.
Because Catlin is Black, Commissioner Veronica McKissick accused Shugars of having another motive for his opposition.
Chair Mike Quinn says their failure to fully support Catlin might send the wrong message to the candidate, but McKissack says it’s already too late.
The vote was 6 to 4 in favor of Catlin.
Negotiations will now begin on the employment contract, and more investigation may be done on exactly what is going on in Boone County.
A final vote on his contract could come at their first meeting in April.
