KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – When it comes to criminal justice, the latest statistics from state Corrections Department officials show Kalamazoo County is doing it right.
Kalamazoo was ranked second among Michigan’s 83 counties in installing effective reforms to turn around offenders and reduce incarcerations.
County Community Corrections Ken Bobo says they were concerned the crime rate might spike during the pandemic, but the numbers remained stable.
He says that’s largely due to their Cognitive Behavior Training Program for offenders.
And Bobo says prison aren’t rehabilitating offenders.
Bobo says gun violence has spiked everywhere, but that represents only a small part of the overall crime picture statistically.
Washtenaw County edged out Kalamazoo by a 1/10th of a percent during the last fiscal year.
The state study seems to support the findings of a consultant’s study released last month that showed the Kalamazoo County corrections programming was significantly reducing crime.
