KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Another ground breaking ceremony is planned for the city of Kalamazoo, signifying the many changes taking place to improve quality of life for it’s residents. This time it’s for the Children’s Nature Playscape at 302 Academy Street, across from Bronson Park in downtown.
The groundbreaking ceremony is set to take place on Tuesday, March 22, at 12 p.m.
The 130-foot-square Playscape, slated to be completed by year’s end, will be one of the country’s largest natural playscapes in an urban core.
Children’s Nature Playscape Chair Jody Brylinski said, ““It’s an exciting moment on our journey, and we’re eager to celebrate with the whole community.”
The Playscape will have an accessible paved walkway, log benches for children, and artistic benches for adults. Native tall grass, shrubs and other plants will border the site, which will also include play structures, turf and a pondless stream.
Cost of the first phase of the Children’s Nature Playscape is estimated at $1.2 million, with $1 million raised to date.
Initial funding came from First Congregational Church, making it possible to purchase the property and begin the planning phase. Area foundations, nonprofit agencies and local donors provided additional support.
