KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Four current Kalamazoo City Commissioners work in the housing sector. Some have questioned whether that mean they have a conflict of interest when housing issues before the commission come up.
Mayor Dave Anderson, Stephanie Hoffman, and Chris Preadel all work for agencies that help low income residents keep or find housing. They say they abstain when any items that involve those agencies come up.
Mayor Anderson says he has been working for 20 years to increase affordable housing, which includes working with nonprofits.
Commissioner Esteven Juarez bristled at any suggestion of impropriety.
City Commissioner Qianna Decker works in the mortgage department of a local bank as an analyst, and has been a long time advocate for affordable housing.
