KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Kalamazoo is set to host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Kalamazoo Public Safety Station #2 on Wednesday, March 9.
The ceremony will be held at the construction site near the corner of Race and Bryant Streets in the Edison neighborhood at 5 p.m.
The event will include remarks by Mayor David Anderson, City Commissioner Esteven Juarez, and City Manager Jim Ritsema.
The current Station #2 at 1207 Bryant Street was built as a fire station in 1952, more than 30 years before the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety became a fully integrated public safety department.
The building itself will be available for community use in addition to facilitating training and hosting meetings.
City officials say that construction should be completed by summer of 2023.
The $9.46 million project was approved by City Commission in October 2021, with funding included in the Capital Improvement Program budget.
