KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo City Commissioners have approved assistance for a big new affordable housing project planned for downtown Kalamazoo.
It will be a new senior housing complex at 530 South Rose Street, just south of another big new housing project at 400 Rose Street.
Mayor Dave Anderson says the project has snagged a tough-to-get Michigan State Department of Housing Assistance grant that will create 64 new units downtown.
Monday night the commission approved a “payment in lieu of taxes,” which will reduce the local taxes on the project That was a requirement to get the state grant.
Sharilyn Parsons with Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services says it will provide what the city needs most, which is affordable housing.
If all goes as planned, the first occupants could be moving in late next year.
The report on the project notes that “A 2015 target market analysis showed a need for more than 2,000 new rental units to serve the needs of the Kalamazoo County population. Since that time, less than 500 have been built.”
