KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners has hired their first Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion.
William Alvin Gray, who was appointed during a special meeting of the board on February 9th, began work on Monday, March 7.
In his role, Gray will implement the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Work Plan, develop and manage comprehensive agency-wide programming, and provide guidance to leadership and employees at every level of the organization.
His duties will include providing training, technical expertise, coordination, and guidance for committees and teams to build efficacy and cultural competency across Kalamazoo County Government.
“I’m honored and humbled to have been chosen for the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, for Kalamazoo County. Certainly, I’m excited and eager to meet with new colleagues, committees, and co-partners on the job, as well as in the community.” said Gray. “There is much to learn from the people concerning the area. Moreover, I desire to learn what love and justice look like to the people of Kalamazoo County and how I can best serve in that context.”
Gray has over 18 years of experience and training in anti-racism work and has held positions leading and coaching DEI success, strategic planning, and program management with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Grand Rapids Community College, Urban Young Life Grand Rapids, and The Other Way Ministries.
