BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Battle Creek Fire Department had to deal with what are being called two suspicious fires within nine hours at the vacant Southwestern Junior High building at 390 South Washington Avenue.
The latest fires bring the number of suspicious fire at that location up to six within the last year.
The first fire was reported at 2:31 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Light smoke was showing from the building when Battle Creek firefighters arrived.
The fire was found in the area of the auditorium and it was placed under control within 20 minutes.
Damage was contained to the stage area. No injuries were reported.
The second fire was reported at about 11:30 p.m. in a third floor classroom area.
It also took about 20 minutes to get the second fire under control with damage limited to one room
The cause of the fires remain under investigation by the department’s Fire Marshal.
