BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek police have found what they believe to be the remains of Amber Griffin on Thursday, March 3.
Investigators went searching for her remains on Wednesday, March 2, after her accused murderer, 27-year-old Derek Horton offered to point out the location where he had left her body in an exchange for a plea deal on day two of his trial.
Battle Creek Police Lieutenant Joel Case briefed reporters in a live press conference shortly after her remains were found.
Griffin had last been seen alive at a Battle Creek house party in June 2020. Prosecutors charged Horton with murder days after she was reported missing.
In exchange, Horton pleaded no contest to second degree murder on Wednesday, which carries a minimum sentence of 15 years. The Calhoun County Prosecutors Office said that the plea deal was contingent on finding Griffin’s remains, which police now feel that Horton has held up his end of the bargain.
Griffin’s remains were located in an area near Waubascon Road between Limit and Hubbard Streets with the help of Michigan State Police K-9s. The 27-year-old mother of two, is believed to have been murdered on June 23rd, 2020. Horton, who was her boyfriend at the time, was arrested three days later.
