KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Clergy, civic and community leaders in the Kalamazoo area are all set to lead a Community March and Rally for Voting Rights on Sunday, March 6th.
Participants will gather at 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Riverview Drive and Paterson Street and march to the Douglass Community Association building at 1000 West Patterson Street.
There, a Voting Rights Rally and Press Conference will be held featuring local and regional clergy, civic, and community leaders who will urge legislators to move forward with the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act currently stalled in Congress.
Organizers say the overall aim of the march and rally is to educate citizens about voter suppression and how it adversely impacts people of color, the elderly, and college students.
They also say the day will commemorate the 57th Anniversary of “Bloody Sunday”, the non-violent protest for voting rights which resulted in tragedy as many were injured, maimed, or killed attempting to cross the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Alabama.
Those looking for more information on the march should call Galilee Baptist Church at 269-349-5597.
