KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Some Kalamazoo County employees who were considered essential workers during the pandemic could be in for some extra money, and it could be a big bonus.
Sheriff’s Deputies have already received a $1000 bonus from a state program.
Kalamazoo County Finance Director Amanda Morse was recommending lump sum payments of $1,000 to $2,000 for any county employee who meets the latest federal standard for those who were in harm’s way, which would be those who dealt directly with the public or handled items touched by others.
But Commissioner Veronica McKissack says that isn’t nearly enough, preferring Genesee County’s plan to pay $7,500 in bonuses for 2021, with a possible additional check for this year.
There appears to be enough support from other county commissioners to endorse the higher figure. The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners will vote on the bonus plan at their meeting Tuesday night.
The funding would come from the share of the American Rescue Plan Act.
