KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Anyone who listens to music knows it can do more than just get your toe tapping. It also conjures up emotions and memories, improving your mood, and even test scores.
Researchers at Western Michigan University also say it can help people recover from a wide assortment of brain injuries, mental health issues, autism, and other developmental disabilities. Researchers at WMU’s BRAIN Lab are figuring out how to do it better.
BRAIN Lab co-founder Ed Roth says they have assembled a team from several WMU departments and are working with experts from across the nation to figure out the effects of listening to, and making music, on the brain’s motor functions and chemistry.
Roth says they are competing for grants from the $25-million dollars the National Institutes of Health has set aside for such research.
