KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A phone scam involving callers impersonating law enforcement officers is once again circulating in Kalamazoo County.
That’s according to Sheriff Richard Fuller, who spoke with WKZO on the matter Wednesday.
“It’s happening again, it’s in the area, so I’m sure our residents and getting the phone calls,” Fuller said. “Someone is reaching out saying that ‘this is Sheriff Richard Fuller,’ and I’m coming to arrest you if you don’t pay a fine or a fee or whatever it is, and they ask them to go get the Blue Dot Cards. Those are cards you load money on that you can get at Meijer or Target. They ask to give the number over the phone.”
Fuller says these types of criminals are often difficult to find.
“Sadly, they’re usually not from the area, and we don’t find out about these crimes until long after some has been a victim,” Fuller said.
Fuller is now reminding residents that a real law enforcement representative will never contact anyone this way.
“We try to tell people the Sheriff is not going to call you, no one from this agency is going to call you and say we have an arrest warrant and we’re coming to pick you up unless you pay a fine,” Fuller said. “Hopefully people can remember that. Hang up on these individuals and report it to the Sheriff’s Office.”
