KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo Police Officer was hospitalized on Thursday, January 20, after being struck by a vehicle while trying to arrest a wanted person.
According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, officers were working to arrest multiple wanted people in the 5000 block of West Main Street near Drake Road.
Authorities say during the arrest, the suspect drove off, hitting one of the officers who was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers then caught up with the suspect who refused to pull over. They briefly gave chase, but called it off due to putting the public in danger. They found the suspect in a vehicle a short time later, who surrendered peacefully.
Police found the suspect, and 18-year-old Kalamazoo man, in possession of a loaded gun in the vehicle. The suspect was arrested on several felony charges.
Investigators say they are still looking for the other people inside the vehicle, but could not say how many people they were looking for.
