OKEMOS, MI — The results from the Okemos School District survey about renaming its mascot will be revealed later today.
The Okemos School Board decided to rid the district of the “Chiefs” moniker in May 2021 after the district found the old nickname was offensive to some indigenous people.
Okemos School District officials will unveil the recommended name change late Thursday afternoon based on feedback the district received from surveys of students, alumni, parents, and community members. The school board will ultimately give the tumbs up or thumbs down on the recommendation.
The names of the mascot have been narrowed down to Eagles, Grizzlies, Wolves and Owls. The colors of the new logo will stay the same – light blue and maroon, according to school officials.
