KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office will be receiving funding for new dash cameras for its vehicles, as decided by the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners this week.
County documents state the following information:
“The existing in-car recording system is obsolete, has become increasingly difficult to obtain replacement parts and as a result is expensive to maintain. The Sheriff’s Office does not currently have enough working cameras for all patrol vehicles. The Sheriff’s Office will purchase 38 cameras and vehicle licenses along with storage capability.”
The purchase agreement totaled out to $329,428.40.
Sheriff Richard Fuller spoke with WKZO Wednesday about this development and how it will impact the department.
“We’ve had cameras for many years, we started out with old VHS tapes, we used to have to erase the tapes [after 30 days] if there was no evidence that was going to be kept for a court case,” Fuller said. “We would put the tape back in, and over time we had to keep buying new tapes. Of course, modern technology is basically all computers. We’re looking forward to it.”
