KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – On the day commemorating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a number of students held a protest outside Kalamazoo Loy Norrix High School Monday, calling on the district to prioritize COVID-19 safety and take action against racism.
In video posted by Black Lives Matter Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, several students said racism is present in the Kalamazoo Public Schools and administrators aren’t protecting them against discrimination or COVID-19.
The students had walked out of the high school for the protest, but reportedly were not allowed back into the building by administrators.
Black Lives Matter Kalamazoo-Battle Creek hosted a community discussion on Zoom Monday afternoon. WWMT-TV reports that during the meeting, participants shared stories from students and staff about their experiences with COVID-19 protocols in the district.
Black Lives Matter Kalamazoo-Battle Creek said in a statement that they support students using their right to demonstrate to protest injustice, lack of safety, and problematic policies in their schools.
