KALAMAZOO MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo lit the lamp three times in the final period Friday night, pushing the K Wings past an outmanned Toledo Walleye team, 4-2.
The Walleye played the game with only 16 players available, and Kalamazoo took advantage of their rivals’ fatigue in picking up the victory.
Toledo’s Brady Tomlak scored the lone goal in the first period, as the Walleye led despite being outshot by Kalamazoo.
Max Humitz scored the equalizer for the K Wings about halfway through the second period, setting the stage for the explosive last stanza.
Keeghan Howdeshell gave the Walleye the lead early in the third, but Kalamazoo’s penchant for late game comebacks made an appearance, as Justin Murray and Jake Slaker beat Toledo netminder Max Milosek with about three minutes to put the K Wings ahead for good.
Tanner Sorenson capped the scoring with an empty net goal at the 19:10 mark.
Kalamazoo outshot Toledo 44-29, and there were only three penalties called during the game, two on Toledo and one on the K Wings.
Kalamazoo goaltender Trevor Gorsuch stopped 27 of 29 shots in picking up the win.
The K Wings host division rival Cincinnati Saturday night, as former Kalamazoo great Neil Meademore will see his number 27 jersey raised to the Wings Event Center rafters in a retirement ceremony.
Air time on 590/106.9 FM WKZO is 6:40 pm.
