DORR TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — “Unreal to see a car flying the way it did. I’ve never seen anything like it except in the movies.”
Real life imitated the movies on Friday afternoon, January 14, in Dorr Township as a video camera from Huizinga Rebuilding and Truck Parts Incorporated captured the moment a car went airborne off a US 131 exit ramp.
Michigan State Police say the accident happened around 2 p.m. when a 25-year-old Kalamazoo man was traveling south when his vehicle veered off the roadway at exit 68, drove up an embankment, and went airborne, hitting a road sign before landing in a ditch on 142 Avenue.
During an interview with WWMT, Mike Rodriguez, who works next door to the business, said he was driving directly behind the vehicle when it happened.
“As I was coming up to the stop sign, I heard a thud and I quickly looked over my left shoulder. I could see this vehicle going airborne over the overpass,” said Rodriguez.
MSP Troopers say the driver of the car survived with non-life threatening injuries but will soon be facing various charges, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The driver was transported to Bronson Hospital for further evaluation of his injuries.
