KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Following the first death of the first Kalamazoo Public Schools student from COVID-19, the district’s Board of Education at their meeting Thursday night heard calls from parents for a break from classes until infection rates decline.
17-year old Taigan Bradford, a senior at Kalamazoo Central High School, died Wednesday after a two-month battle with the virus.
Right now, infection rates are setting record highs and parents and teachers told trustees they are concerned.
Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri says they are beefing up and altering their policies to match guidance from state and local health officials. The biggest will be new restrictions on any event or activity with more than 100 participants.
Notifications on all the changes will be sent out to staff and parents Friday.
Bradford’s mother believes she contracted the virus at school.
Dr. Raichoudhuri says schools can continue to operate with the new precautions in place, because while Omicron is more infectious, it’s less likely to cause serious illness.
