KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A major snowstorm roared into west Michigan Wednesday afternoon, with Kalamazoo County and much of the lakeshore under a Winter Storm Warning until 10:00 a.m. Friday morning.
In addition to snowfall totals that could total between eight to 14 inches west of U.S. 131, wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour were creating whiteout conditions in some area.
Around 3:45 a.m. Thursday, eastbound I-94 near the 68-mile-marker (Kalamazoo/Van Buren County Line) was completely shut down due to several accidents. Traffic was being directed off the highway at the 66-mile-marker (Mattawan exit).
Most schools in Kalamazoo, Allegan, and Van Buren counties are closed Thursday, and the City of Kalamazoo offices will be closed Thursday. January 6. Essential services such as snow plowing, utilities, and public safety services will continue to operate.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Calhoun and St. Joseph counties until 10:00 a.m. Friday.
