LANSING, MI — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a bill that will address the substitute teacher shortages across the state. School districts will now be able to use non-teaching staff as substitute teachers in Michigan. Governor Whitmer says she signed the bill last week and calls it a “temporary stopgap” in addressing the teacher shortage.
School staff with a high school diploma or GED will be able to substitute for the rest of this school year. The bill allows “trusted staff members” to work as the subs. Whitmer says the move will give districts more flexibility when filling substitute teacher vacancies.
