KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Monday night, Kalamazoo City Commissioners held what they are hoping will be their final virtual Zoom meeting.
A resolution was approved saluting city staff for doing all they have done to get the city through the pandemic, in the full knowledge that it isn’t over yet.
Mayor David Anderson singled out Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain, who has been organizing and hosting the online-meetings. He called him the “Don Pardo” of Kalamazoo.
“It’s kind of bittersweet, we’ve gotten to know each other in this way, and it will be no more,” Mayor Anderson said. “So I appreciate all the work you’ve done.”
What’s coming could be even more complicated as they prepare to go back to live meetings, not just for the Commission, but for the 30 other city boards and committees that have also been using Zoom.
Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain says doing it safely will be the challenge.
“Some of them will not be streamed,” Chamberlain said. “We are trying to make sure that the boards who have seen the most interaction, that we get those streamed. Those are Community and Public Safety Review and Appeals Board, the Civil Rights Board, Foundation For Excellence Board, the Planning Commission and Shared Prosperity.”
It’s been 22 months since the Commission has met face-to-face.
Commissioners also approved new rules for mandatory masks at meetings and changes to the policy on public comments during their “Farewell to Zoom” session last night.
