PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Portage is reporting a sanitary sewer overflow that took place over the weekend.
Around 6 p.m. Saturday, December 18, an overflow from a sewer manhole was detected near 1700 Quaker Avenue. Officials say the overflow was found to be caused by a blockage in the pipe.
The overflow was fixed by 10:30 p.m. that same night.
Before the blockage was cleared, approximately 9,500 gallons of wastewater leaked onto the low-lying, wooded area directly surrounding the Quaker Avenue Pump Station.
The area was cordoned off and powdered lime was spread over the ground.
Officials say no health impacts are expected from the incident.
