KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees has given a raise and a big bonus to President Edward Montgomery, despite overwhelming opposition from faculty unions.
The board Thursday unanimously approved a 1.5% raise and a $75,000 merit bonus to Dr. Montgomery, after an evaluation and comparing what other universities have done.
The WMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors union has taken a “no-confidence” vote in the President, saying enrollment is down, morale is dismal and he bungled the pandemic. The results of the vote will be released today.
Board Chair Lynn Chen-Zhan says these are challenging times and students have to be their top priority. .
Board Vice-Chair William Johnston defended their decision, saying dwindling state funding and declining enrollments has limited their resources.
The Board deferred any raise or bonus for Montgomery last year because of the financial uncertainties created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
