KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Kalamazoo has received petitions to improve public safety in the Fraternity Village area west of the Western Michigan University (WMU) campus.
The signature drive was organized by sororities in the area who fear for the safety of their members.
Mayor David Anderson says it was bolstered by a death in the area last month.
“A young woman died on Fraternity [Village Drive], and there has been some community concerns expressed about the speed of traffic and lack of sidewalks in some areas,” Mayor Anderson said.
19-year-old WMU Student Bailey Broderick was killed last month as she tried to cross Fraternity Village Drive in the dark. She was struck by a teen driver who was allegedly intoxicated at the time.
Her death shook the University community.
Over 250 signatures were collected, calling for lighting, road and sidewalk improvements, along with brush clearing along Fraternity Drive and at adjacent intersections.
They also want more public safety patrols.
City Staff adds that there are already plans in the works for improvements in that area.
