KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Transportation Officials are calling for a stronger police presence at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center following a random shooting that occurred there two weeks ago.
According to WWMT, a December 3rd memo to city leaders from Kalamazoo County Transportation Authority and Metro Transit officials asked the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety to assign officers to the downtown transportation center.
The memo itself outlined a desire for officials to collaborate with police to ensure long-term safety for all transit users and staff.
Three people were injured on a Metro Transit bus at the center on Saturday November 27. Police shot and killed Anthony Oliver, 54, after responding within minutes.
Transportation officials said unarmed security guards currently patrol the downtown bus and train station and that KDPS officers and Kalamazoo County sheriff’s deputies used to be stationed at the transportation center.
The KCTA approved a request to increase the presence of security guards at its October 11 meeting and plan to discuss security issues at its December 13 meeting.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police.
