LANSING, MI — General Motors wants to build a new battery plant in Michigan as the automaker transitions to all electric vehicles by 2035. And a report in today’s Detroit Free Press says the automaker is eyeing the Lansing area for that plant, which will cost billions to build. The Freep says their story is based on city records and those familiar with the latest developments.
GM is considering the Lansing area for its third Ultium LLC battery plant, which is a company that does battery joint ventures with GM. The battery maker has submitted a “renaissance zone” tax abatement application with the city for a project on GM-owned land that would cost up to $2.5 billion, according to the Free Press. The plant could create 750 full-time jobs as soon as 2025.
The automaker already employs almost 5,000 workers in the Lansing area at several plants.
