Researchers have found a way to help crops do well under drought as well as in normal conditions.
A chemical called Antabactin can suppress a hormone that prevents seed for germinating under high temperatures. So far, they report testing with tomatoes, wheat and barley. Tests are being started involving lettuce. A scientist at the University of California Riverside says Antabactin has proven effective even when conditions aren’t severely dry. He says the team feels proper use of their chemical could help increase the worldwide food supply.
More detailed information on the chemical is available in a new paper published in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
