KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Editor’s Note – This story has been updated as of 5:00 p.m.
A press conference was held Wednesday by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) and Michigan State Police to provide additional details regarding the shooting incident at the Kalamazoo Transportation Center on Saturday.
The State Police presented a video of the incident during the press conference and stated that all three victims have recovered and have been released from the hospital.
They also stated that the suspect, 54-year-old Anthony Oliver, had in the past threatened “suicide by police.” It was also noted that he had a criminal history and had received psychiatric treatment as recently as 2018.
Oliver was shot by police officers during the incident and later died from his injuries.
— Editor’s Note – KDPS provided WKZO with body camera footage from the incident. The video is included below. It contains graphic content, and viewer discretion is advised. —
Additional footage was uploaded by Fox News and can be viewed here.
“Mr. Oliver did threaten suicide by cop, and he spoke of wanting to end it that way,” State Police Lt. Shane Krieger said at the conference. “It is my understanding that he was admitted to a mental hospital at that time.”
The handgun he used in the crime was unregistered.
“The last information I got was that the gun changed hands three times between the last registered owner of the gun and this incident,” Lt. Krieger said.
Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson made an emotional plea that more needs to be done to de-stigmatize mental health issues, and that more needs to be done to help those who are suffering from them.
It was said that all witnesses involved have been interviewed. However, police are still interested in talking with anyone who was at the station at the time of the shootings.
Those with additional information can call the Michigan State Police Tip Line at 844-642-8384, or contact via email at MSP-51tips@michigan.gov.
A motive has yet to be established at this time.
