KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Nearly a week after being elected, new members of the 54th Kalamazoo City Commission will be sworn in tonight.
Mayor Dave Anderson had mentioned at their last business meeting that he would like to hold a live, face-to-face meeting, but it looks like tonight’s ceremonies will be done remotely instead. That means this will be the first batch of new Commissions to go into budget talks virtually. Anderson says it’s not an easy task, even during normal times.
“It’s a little bit overwhelming running and then sitting up there and making decisions on literally how you’re going to spend $200,000,000. So there’s a lot of work we have to do helping everybody get up to speed.”
He says they will keep using Zoom to conduct their activities for at least the next two months.
Anderson was re-elected as Kalamazoo Mayor last week, and board veteran Don Cooney will be sworn in as Vice Mayor. Stephanie Hoffman, Quianna Decker, and Esto Juarez will take the oath as commissioners. They will join Chris Preadel and Jeanne Hess who are halfway through their 4-year terms.
