LANSING MI (WKZO AM/FM) – UPDATE: Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Director Anita Fox has issued a statement in response to Governor Gretchen Whitmer calling on the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) to deliver refund checks to every Michigander with auto insurance.
The statement reads as follows:
“With our focus on consumer protection, DIFS’ priority is to ensure that Michiganders benefit from savings created by the new auto insurance law in every way possible,” Fox said. “I stand with the Governor in calling on the MCCA and its member companies to promptly issue refund checks to return the surplus to Michiganders.”

Governor Whitmer is calling on a state agency to issue refund checks to each state resident with auto insurance.
Whitmer said that the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) has a five billion dollar surplus, and because the state passed historic auto insurance reform in 2019, the MCCA should return money to those who have auto insurance in Michigan.
Whitmer stated in a release that “the over $5 billion surplus accumulated by the MCCA belongs to Michiganders and should be put in people’s pockets immediately with a refund check.”
